Currently representing Japan at the 60th Venice Biennale, Yuko Mohri (1980 - ) is one of the leading contemporary artists active domestically and internationally. Mohri’s style is widely known for her installation works focusing on ‘events’, which are depicted through comprehensively integrating acoustic, readymade and kinetic elements. Having been influenced by the fast rhythms of music production, Mohri improvises and composes her work by incorporating inherent characteristics of space, the socio-historical context of place, and locally found objects into the space.
This work, entitled ’Sadly’ is composed of objects such as electrified candelabra, filament bulbs, cable, motor, step-down transformer, and candle waxes. As each bulb gently flickers from the end of each cable connecting to a candle, the moron and the wires attached to it rotate and friction with adjacent candlesticks, creating a quiet noise in the space. The subtle events depicted by the actors, which are brought to life by such ‘electric current’ disperse its sad atmosphere within the space. This work was exhibited in the ONLINE exhibition held at Akio Nagasawa Gallery in 2021.
