Inspired by traditional Japanese tsubo, Kazunori Hamana (b. 1969) is known for his organically shaped ceramic works crafted from natural clay sourced in Shigaraki. A self-taught ceramicist, Hamana left home at the age of 15 to work with farmers in rural Hyogo Prefecture, where he developed a lifelong interest in the natural environment. His ceramic pieces are handmade through improvisation and experimentation, and after firing, the pots are placed outdoors to be shaped further by natural elements such as sunlight and sea breezes. Hamana’s sculptures embody the beauty of transience and the space surrounding them, reflecting his approach to exploring the relationship with nature through a historical yet contemporary lens.
