DESCRIPTION

Eikoh Hosoe (born 1933) is a photographer who has had a significant impact on post-war Japanese photography. Beginning his career in the mid-1950s as an image-maker working with a wide range of subjects, Hosoe played a leading role in establishing the post-war Japanese photographic scene. Through his avant-garde approach, he discovered new connections with art, literature, performance, and film, developing photography as a unique medium within the artistic forms of documentary and realism. His exploration of the human body, its beauty, and its uniqueness is most notably reflected in his iconic work Ordeal by Roses, created in collaboration with the writer Yukio Mishima. This remarkable piece, which captures Mishima as a subject and expresses his physical beauty and views on life and death, shocked Japanese society and solidified Hosoe’s reputation. By transcending traditional photographic expression and creating visually and emotionally challenging works, Hosoe is regarded as one of the most influential photographers in Japanese photographic history.

This work is from the Gaudí's Universe series, inspired by the works of the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí. Focusing on the unique curves and distinctive designs of Gaudí's architecture, Hosoe captures these structures as if they were living beings. This artwork expresses a unique perspective that conveys the vitality and cosmic expansiveness inherent in Gaudí's architecture, resulting in a work that pursues a new form of beauty through the fusion of architecture and photography.
