A contemporary art and design brand founded by Brian Donnelly (born in 1974), KAWS gained attention in the 1990s by modifying advertisements on buses and trains by adding a character called "Companion." By reconstructing the messages of corporate advertisements, KAWS drew public notice. Later, through collaborations with high-end brands and acquisitions by museums, KAWS expanded the definition of art. The character "Companion," influenced by Disney and comic books, reflects the mood of contemporary society. Mischievous yet melancholic, it embodies haunting themes of loneliness and self-erasure, which are constantly reproduced in this age.
This work is one of the artist's representative pieces from his early career. Utilizing public spaces in New York City, such as advertising posters and bus stop billboards, KAWS employed an "adjuster" technique, layering his art over existing advertisements. By adding "Companion" to the original motifs and altering their meaning, KAWS reconstructed the narrative, subtly critiquing consumer society and the media. His works from this period hint at a transition from street art to gallery spaces, contributing to the establishment of KAWS's signature style, which blurs the boundaries between pop art and fine art.
