Born into a Puerto Rican family in Chicago, Dzine (also known as Carlos Rolón) (1970-) is a contemporary artist who explores themes of craftsmanship, ritual, definitions of beauty, spirituality, and identity. His paintings, sculptures, and installations reflect his cultural background and personal memories, epitomized by his opulent large-scale works featuring lush tropical flowers against a backdrop of gold leaf. Known for his vivid use of materials, Dzine has held numerous solo exhibitions in prestigious museums and galleries worldwide, including the Bass Museum of Art in Miami, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, UK, the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico in San Juan, and SCAI The Bathhouse and Kotaro Nukaga in Japan.
This work Hiroshi’s Dub transforms the musical energy of Fujiware Hiroshi, who also contributed music to the artist's solo exhibition stealing dreams at SCAI The Bathhouse in 2006, into visual expression. It sublimates the psychedelic and pop art of the 1960s and 70s into organic postmodern elements and abstract motifs, visually transforming musical sound effects. Through the fusion of his memories and imagination, the reproduction of urban consumption and the rhythmic repetition of music are interwoven as repeated droplet motifs on the vibrant canvas, evoking a sense of a dry urban landscape. This work exudes a sense of festivity and regret, balancing between melancholy, excess, and splendor.
