Haroshi (1978-), known for his works created from discarded skateboard decks, began making art using this unique material in 2003. As a skater himself, Haroshi started utilizing broken and worn-out skateboard decks that he had kept instead of throwing away. His works embody the everyday life of skaters, constantly intertwined with the unexpected accidents reflected in the scratches and breaks of the decks. By repurposing these once-finished skateboard decks, Haroshi breathes new life into them. His mentality of breaking free from the constraints of street culture has earned him widespread acclaim in Japan and New York, Los Angeles, London, and beyond.
Created in 2018, this work is a massive two-dimensional piece made by layering and bonding dozens of used skateboard decks. Titled Ramp, the work resembles the slopes of a skateboard ramp, showcasing vibrant, stratified layers of color. While Haroshi is well known for his three-dimensional pieces, this work highlights his distinctive creative process and, through its flat composition, hints at the inherent beauty of the skateboard decks themselves, resulting in a striking abstract piece.
