Makoto Taniguchi, a Tokyo-based painter born in 1982, is widely known for his box paintings consisting of a mirror, acrylic plate, paint, and wood. He began this series in 2007, and it continues to develop continuously. The basic structure of the work consists of an acrylic plate and a mirror, presenting the image of both the paint placed on the surface of the transparent acrylic plate and the reflection of the backside of the paint in the mirror behind the plate. Through this structure, Taniguchi attempts to disclose the material (paint) and the image by showing them simultaneously while separating them.
This work, produced in 2015, is typical of Taniguchi's box paintings, depicting a portrait of a young girl with a simple, ennui expression. The impression of familiarity, fragility, and fragility that these beings evoke for us is a presence that plays an important role in Taniguchi's work as an emotive presence.
