Iván Navarro (1972-) is a Chilean artist who is celebrated for fusing contemporary industrial materials with sociopolitical commentary. Navarro’s use of electricity in art is grounded in the lived experience of growing up in Santiago under the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet (1915-2006) in Chile. Navarro has commented that living through this dictatorship was intensely oppressive, with access to electricity being a method for the government to control people by ensuring they were isolated and forced to stay home. Electricity was also the preferred tool of torture used by the regime. Consequently, Navarro’s light works act as profound comments on governmental control, authority, and power.
Navarro’s employment of mirrors and lights, as exemplified by Abandon (Agbar), creates infinite abyss-like compositions that reveal the hidden depths of familiar materials. The juxtaposition of familiarity and uncertainty creates a conceptually challenging work. The feeling of uncertainty that is present in these works encapsulates Navarro’s experiences of being a child in an unstable Chile, where the fear of being abducted as a child was ever-present. The title, Abandon, heightens these elements of uncertainty and doubt. The void is an unknowable entity that threatens all lives in some form, and Navarro’s poignant use of materials forces the viewer to confront the reality that we remain in a world that is unstable and uncontrollable.
