The eminent German artist Gerhard Richter (1932 - ) has had an unprecedented impact on contemporary art and the art market. Richter’s diverse styles have opened up conceptual and creative developments continuously since the 1960s. Based in Cologne, Richter's work has been extensively exhibited internationally. Central to Richter’s practice is the photograph, with early works questioning the structural integrity of the image.
This work is a print created in 1988, based on the oil painting "Kerze (Candle)" painted in 1982, with the image reversed. The candle has always been an essential symbol for East Germany (GDR), known as a silent protest against the regime. Richter, who experienced feelings related to meditation, memory, silence, and death, expressed this in his work. The brilliantly shining "Kerze" also represents the pinnacle of Richter's technique, characterized by the distinctive blurred effect that he pioneered in the 1960s. There is a sublime composition and a beautiful resonance between the ancient bearer of light, the candle, and the photograph captured by Richter.
