Renowned for his contributions to the American colour field painting movement, Kenneth Noland (1924 – 2010) was born in 1924 in North Carolina, USA. He attended Black Mountain College, known for its experimental artistic practices, and developed an interest in Bauhaus theories and the emotional impact of color and geometric forms. In early 60’s, he began a series of paintings with horizontal stripes, as well as rhythmic and fluid style. By adopting universal canvas shapes and staining the canvas rather than applying colour with a brush to emphasis colour as his only subject matter, he crafted a sense of movement and undulation within dynamic bands of bold striped colours.
This work is a striking example of Noland’s 60’s minimalist aesthetic, where color and simple forms evoke depth and emotion. His manipulation of colour and form transcends the simplicity of the materials, drawing the viewer into a meditative space through a visual abstract language. In signature Noland style at the time, this piece profoundly explores the spatial and coloristic potentials of art, broadening the discourse on contemporary painting.
