David Hockney (1937 - ) is a British contemporary artist and one of the country’s leading Pop Artists. Hockney’s style is consistent across landscape paintings and portraits, featuring bold colors and light textures. These hallmarks are especially visible in the "Swimming Pool" works that capture the essence of Los Angeles, where Hockney has been based since the 1960s. In 1978, on the recommendation of Kenneth Tyler of Tyler Graphics Studio, Hockey began producing woodcut prints on handmade paper using a unique printing method. The representative works of this experimentation was called “Paper Pool”.
This work “Lithographic Water Made of Lines, Crayon and Two Blue Washes Without Green Wash”, was produced during this time. The lithographic process of this work brings the image to life with its combination of energetic marks and colors. The print demonstrates Hockney’s inquisitive exploration of depicting water through contrasting light and dark, as well as surface and depth. This is one of Hockney’s finest representations of water in the medium.
