The Japanese artist TIDE is one of the leading figures within Tokyo’s contemporary art scene. TIDE began his "CAT" series in 2019, creating acrylic canvases that feature a feline protagonist at the centre of a monochrome world. The works deal with the themes of childhood and nostalgia, with the CAT acting as a surrogate for the artist and viewer’s feelings and emotions, within the setting of a familiar domestic space, often a childhood bedroom.
TIDE’s works are an exercise in duality, expressing a complexity that is at odds with the seemingly sentimental subject matter on display; black and white, light and dark, dreams and reality, the familiar and the uncanny. The paintings are also rendered in two-dimensions and three-dimensions, with the living CAT painted flat in a cartoon-like manner contrasting with the inanimate objects depicted in an almost hyper-real technique. His works make reference to the artists and movements that have influenced his style; Roy Lichtenstein, Japanese manga artist, Shigeru Mizuki and the everyday domesticity of Intimism, whilst showing his own unique sense of artistry.
This work, ”Beast”, is an early work from his CAT series and was exhibited in London in 2020 at Ramp Gallery (now Ojiri Gallery). The painting shows the early hallmarks of his "CAT" series, and like many of his paintings, there is a sense of tension in the expression of the cat, with a furrowed brow and exposed claws gripping the soft pillow underneath. There is also an overall sense of unease within the scene, with pictures hanging at an angle, torn fabrics and a broken and scratched bed frame creating a picture of chaos and disarray.
