DESCRIPTION

Thanks to the influence of his grandfather, HAROSHI (born in 1978) was exposed to the art of craftsmanship from early childhood. Taking advantage of these self-taught skills he began working as a craftsman, producing and selling leather accessories and jewelry in Tokyo. HAROSHI also harbored a passion for skateboarding that endured from his teenage years, with skateboards also proving to be the turning point in his career. At the suggestion of his family, he began making works of art from the fragments of skateboards and scraps of wood that accumulated around the house. For this work, HAROSHI used his own foot as the model for the sculpture, and as the title of the work suggests, took inspiration from Jim Phillips’ iconic design ‘Screaming Hand’. Phillips is one of the most famous artists in the world of skateboarding, and this work is a tribute to him, with the sculpture’s beaten up shape reflecting the intensity of the screaming appendage. The more a person skates the better their skills, but despite their improvement, a deck has a limited life span. By reusing old decks as material, the artist gives a lot of meaning to this process and the relationship between skater and deck. In this piece and other similar works, unexpected accidents and the act of breaking is utilized within the work, alluding to an inherent story and the important role of the skater.
