DESCRIPTION

Born in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, Hori Kosai (1947-) entered Tama Art University in 1967 and became a member of Bikyoto (Council of Artists for a United Front). By associating with the Anti-Art movement that questioned the institutional- ized nature of art, he has been a noted presence on the contemporary Japanese art scene since the early 1970s. He mainly worked in performance, video art and painting, but started to pursue painting seriously in the early 1980s. His works have been shown at numerous international exhibitions, including the 1977 Paris Biennale and the 1984 Venice Biennale.

This work, created in 1994, is a large-scale piece filled with the heavy colors and 'Japanese' brushstrokes. Using waves as a figurative concept rather than a realistic depiction, the brushstrokes accumulate strength and flow organically within the painting. The repeated motifs are reminiscent of the fusion between the 'Mono-ha' and the Japanese expressionism of the late 1980s, which Hori has been exploring since the 1980s.
