Born in South Korea and currently based in Brooklyn, New York, Anna Park (1996-) is one of the most promising young artists at present, having been recognized by international curators while still in graduate school. After completing a BA in Illustration and Animation at the Pratt Institute with the dream of becoming an animator, she was drawn to fine art and completed an MA in Fine Art at the New York Academy of Art. She studied under Michael Grimaldi and discovered a fascination with the quickness and generosity of charcoal, and the art of Cecily Brown was an important inspiration for developing a semi-abstract style. Alumnus and contemporary artist, KAWS, purchased her work on the spot when he visited an open studio exhibition during her studies and introduced her work on social media, which led to her work quickly gaining attention in the art world.

This work, Eyes Up Here, was painted during her MA studies. Park often sourced images of glamorous and crowded crowds, such as club scenes and parties, from internet searches, and intuitively uses charcoal to draw limbs and faces in swirling shapes. Her black-and-white works, which evoke the strong narrative and artistic energy and the radical fragmentation of Cubism, arose visual allegories, repeated archetypes, metaphors of Americana, and she expresses inner conflicts, shame, longing, growth and death in her swirling abstract charcoal drawings. Transforming from an illustration technique to an experimental charcoal technique, the work invites the guilty pleasure of voyeuristically observing the debauchery unfolding before our eyes.
